The difference between negative and Photography
let’s clarify
If you’re a photographer, sooner or later it happens: after a service, perhaps while you’re still storing your equipment, comes the fateful request: Can you also give us the original, non-post-produced shots?
And you, inside yourself, make a half smile. But since the question is more than legitimate, let’s try to clarify why it often all stems from misunderstanding.
But what are these “original shots”?
For many, the “original shot” is simply an unretouched photo. For a photographer, however, a RAW file is not a photograph, it’s just informations. Like… a digital negative in pajamas.
In a way, if we compare the same shot we just took with a good cell phone and with an ultra-professional camera that costs as much as a financial maneuver, you won’t believe it, but it’s quite easy for the one with the cell phone to appear, at first glance, more beautiful than the second. This is because the RAW:
- it has dull colors,
- almost non-existent contrast,
- a light that “who knows?”,
- and in general the aesthetic appeal of a photo taken with the toaster.
photographic development In the case of the cell phone, automatic software does this immediately, in the second case it is the photographer who then has to cook the ingredients, the information that was captured in the RAW.
Post-production is part of the photographic “signature”
When you talk about finished photos, you often forget that half the work happens after the shot (much longer in terms of time taken).
My style, the one you maybe choose me for, isn’t just about choosing the lens, the point of view, or the light. It’s also (and a lot) in the way I develop the image.
RAWs contain the informations that the camera captured while shooting, but which is still raw and must necessarily be extracted, such as the sculptor extracting the shape from the marble. They’re like notes. Postproduction is the part where notes are processed and become photographs.
Development is not about fixing flaws
There’s this legend that post-production only serves to remove unwanted pimples, wrinkles, and cousins in the background. If only it were that simple!
Development and retouching are two distinct parts of post-production. The development, which is the first and fundamental part of the post, serves to:
- let the light breathe,
- give balance to colors,
- give better readability to the photo,
- create atmosphere,
- make all photos consistent with each other.
Then, maybe and just maybe, there’s the photo retouching part.
But why don’t you give us these RAWs?
It’s a matter of quality and identity. Delivering RAWs is like giving you the fabric the tailor would use to make you a custom-made dress: we lack the work and craftsmanship to achieve the final result. In addition:
- they are not beautiful,
- they are not ready for printing,
- they don’t really tell my style and skills,
- and risk being reinterpreted in… let’s say… creative ways.
On the contrary, my goal is to always guarantee:
- technical quality,
- aesthetic coherence,
- respect for my artistic identity,
- but most of all the joy of seeing you in a wow image that you will cherish forever!
In short: no :)
